Magnesium is an essential mineral, one of seven essential macro-minerals that the human body needs.  It is necessary for basic life functions such as protein synthesis, muscle and nerve functioning, blood glucose control and blood pressure regulation.  Magnesium activates Vitamin D, B-vitamins, and glutathione.  It can aid in the prevention of strokes and is essential for skeletal growth and development.  Muscles need magnesium to contract and to relax; nerves need it to send and receive messages. It keeps the heart beating steadily and the immune system strong and assists with the transport of calcium and potassium in the body.

Most people are in fact magnesium deficient when tested and therefore supplementation may be advised.  The body cannot produce magnesium, it must be obtained from external sources.  Without sufficient magnesium, a person can experience depleted energy levels and poor sleep quality.  Cognitive function can be impaired (poor memory and a lack of concentration), and depression and anxiety can result.  Muscle cramps and spasms are common and the ability to deal with stress can be impaired.  Deficiencies can result in headaches and bowel abnormalities, and the immune system will not function optimally. Adults who get less than the recommended amount of magnesium are more likely to have elevated inflammation markers. Inflammation has been associated with major health conditions such as heart diseasediabetes, and certain cancers.  Low magnesium levels appear to be a risk factor for osteoporosis.
